Lunchtime conference: Structural stigmatization and experiences of moral distress among correctional officers (conference in French, automatic closed captions available)
November 24, 2025 from 12 to 1 p.m.
- Speaker: Denise Brend, Professor of Criminology, UL
- Moderator: Catherine Rossi, Professor of Criminology, UL
Denise is a professor at the School of Social Work and Criminology, where her teaching and research focus on trauma-sensitive and socially grounded interventions with court-ordered populations.
With a background in social work and extensive experience in academic and community settings, Denise directs a research program founded on the principles of collaboration, compassion and respect. This program explores how trauma - including poverty, racism, gender-based violence and exclusion from services - shapes the trajectories of adults and youth in contact with systems of care and control.
Committed to a partnership-based research approach, Denise works closely with community organizations to co-construct knowledge rooted in lived experience and expertise derived from practice. This work is supported by several provincial and national research grants, and Denise is regularly asked to participate in initiatives related to issues of trauma, justice and community intervention.
