Between two closets: The complexity of the pathways taken by queer men in Quebec in situations of intimate partner violence in terms of access to formal support and secondary victimisation in services
Conjugality and the violence that can be experienced within it are often conceptualized through a hetero-cisnormative prism, which leaves little room for the realities of LGBTQ+ populations. This lack of recognition helps to shape the contours of secondary victimization in services. Initially conceptualized as second injury (Symonds 1980), secondary victimization refers to the inappropriate reactions, lack of sensitivity or judgments that can add to victims' distress (Wemmers 2017). Drawing on a secondary analysis of data collected from gay and bisexual men (Roy et al., 2017-2021; 2019-2024), carried out as part of a research internship funded by an FRQ grant, this webinar will present queer men's experiences of secondary victimization with formal support services and discuss avenues for avoiding these experiences among less visible audiences in situations of intimate partner violence.
